A Reason for Hope

This sermon explored Paul's letter to the Romans, specifically chapters 1 through 3, and why these chapters must always be read together.

Romans 1 is often used in isolation to address questions about sexuality and cultural sin, but when pulled from its context, we miss the far greater and more beautiful argument Paul is building. Paul's true aim is to show that every human being - whether caught in open rebellion against God or hiding behind a spirit of self-righteousness - stands equally in need of the Savior.

The gospel of Jesus Christ, declared in Romans 1:16-17, is the power of God for salvation for everyone who believes, and it is only when we see our own need clearly that we can receive and share that gospel with the humility and love it demands.

Key Takeaways

  • Context matters deeply when reading Scripture. Romans 1 describes the condition of humanity apart from God's grace, but Romans 2 and 3 complete the picture by showing that no one is exempt from that condition and that God's answer to it is the righteousness found only in Jesus Christ.
  • Self-righteousness is just as dangerous as self-indulgence. The moment we use the law to look down on others while excusing ourselves, we have misunderstood the law entirely. Paul makes clear in Romans 2 that God's judgment applies to those who judge others just as much as it applies to those being judged.
  • The gospel calls us to love both victim and perpetrator. God's love, demonstrated at the cross, extends to every sinner without exception. As the story of Ron in Minneapolis illustrated, when a believer is filled with the love of Christ, even a collision at an intersection can become a moment of witness and grace.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, keep us from reading Your Word out of context or using it to condemn others while excusing ourselves. Lead us to repentance, humble us under Your law, and fill us with the power of Your gospel so we see every person as someone You love and died to save. Amen.
